Gofuture Volunteer Network is a registered non-governmental organisation and an affiliate of the Child Protection Network of Nigeria (CPN). The Action Against Child Abandonment Campaign (AACA) is a project inspired by a problem which is growing due to a weak social welfare system and a failing medical system in Nigeria. The problem of baby dumping has become one of the most prevalent forms of child abuse in Africa. It is observed to be an increasing issue in countries lacking social welfare systems that cater to indigent residents seeking a ‘safe haven’ for babies they do not wish to keep. Nigeria, like many developing countries, lacks reliable national statistics on cases of abandoned infants. UNICEF reports that over 80% of children in African orphanages have living parents who are unable to provide food, clothing, or access to education and healthcare. Consequently, children with disabilities or special needs often end up being abandoned.
Through this campaign, Gofuture aims to raise awareness of the issue by amplifying the voices of the voiceless to spur action towards solutions. AACA’s objective is to support children abandoned due to their medical and family economic circumstances. The AACA campaign seeks to:
- Draw global attention to the escalating problem of child abandonment in regions without social welfare institutions through awareness creation.
- Collaborate with organisations keen on making meaningful contributions to the health, education, and youth development of vulnerable populations in the Global South.
- Raise funds for identified children abandoned in public hospitals due to complex medical conditions.
Gofuture hosted the Blue-Ribbon Charity Ball in December 2024 to unite stakeholders to tackle the escalating issue of baby dumping and to raise funds for selected cases. The Charity Ball provided entertainment, dining, and socialising while supporting a worthy cause. The event featured a private viewing of the documentary film ‘Home Never’ and the launch of a trust fund for abandoned children. The campaign continues with advocacy efforts to raise funds for children abandoned in public hospitals. In this phase of the ongoing campaign, the team’s strategy is to align with partners interested in providing medical and social services to selected public health facilities and families to address the increasing cases of child abandonment in regions with inadequate social security systems.
